Claiming compensation for Heath Care Acquired infections.

Most of the infections you are likely to pick up in hospital can be prevented with thorough hand hygiene and environmental cleaning. All Hospitals have to have policies and audit against them.  If a hospital has not followed procedures thoroughly, and there is evidence that the bacteria was present, it is possible to claim for your illness. Infections can be serious, for example MRSA can cause on-going issues if it gets into the blood stream via open wounds or catheters/cannulas etc.

Mulcare Jenkins’ experts have experience in successfully claiming for such conditions, some of which can attract high levels of compensation where surgery is required to remove infected tissue.

If you have suffered from hospital acquired MRSA or C.difficile, call us. We can advise on the possibility of claiming.

How common are infections?

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile can be of major concern for hospital patients. Infections  can be deadly, and the Government has introduced national policies for their control and reduction.

However Health Protection Agency statistics show that around 6% of hospital patients in England catch some form of infection during their stay. The figure includes pneumonia and norovirus as well as “superbugs” such as MRSA.

At the same time infections with organisms such as E. coli and salmonella, are increasing. Overall newborns and the elderly were most likely to acquire an infection and infections were highest in intensive care units and on surgical wards.
